2009-10-26

During the 14th MIF on 24th October, the Contact Point in Macao together with IPIM, CPTTM and EUBIP co-organized the “EU-Macao Business Opportunity Seminar – Developing New Industries Based on Creativity and Intellectual Property” in order to have European expertise to share their knowledge and experience in these fields with our audience in Macao. We are honored to have Mr. Stephane Passeri, an Independent Consultant in Bangkok on Intellectual Property Rights Co-operation and Mr. Simon Evans, the Director and Founder of Creative Clusters Limited in UK to be our keynote speakers.

Mr. Passeri has been working in Intellectual Property Rights since 1999. He explained to the audience the importance and advantages of protecting their IP and the related strategies in Europe. Moreover, he explained the procedures of obtaining a patent or trademark in Europe. On the other hand, Mr. Evans shared his knowledge on the development of creative industries in UK and the business opportunities derived from them.

After the presentation, a panel was held with the keynote speakers and the local industry players to discuss the development of the creative industries in Macao and the support needed from the government. The local industry players explained their difficulties and shared their experience in developing such industries in Macao. On the other hand, the representatives from academic institutes explained the education and exhibition facilities provided in Macao for these emerging industries.

Finally, a business matching session was held with interested parties to contact with the registered enterprises to see if any cooperation or business could be developed. The seminar was well attended with around 100 audiences which mainly comprised with private enterprises and current design students. The success of this seminar proved the growing concerns and interests in developing creative industries in Macao which could turn out to be a big business in the future.
